Heatwave Hairstyles for Summer

Summer is a great time for experimenting with fun, bright new fashion trends. As the temperature gets hotter, I look for new means to work a sundress or a pair of cutoffs—and also to experiment with ways to tame my thick, long brown hair as the humidity takes its toll. I know I’m not the only one with heat wave hair struggles, so hopefully these new summer hair trends will help us rock flawless summer looks from hair to toe.

The first and most flexible hairstyle to rock this summer is an old standby: braids! But I’m not talking Pippi Longstocking pigtails—there’s so much more. The fishtail braid is a fun and easy style to try; I like pulling all of my hair to the side in a low pony and braiding it all into a fishtail. One of the greatest parts of a fishtail braid is that it looks great even when it’s a little messy, so it really takes no effort. Another great braid to try is a braid crown. For those who are a little more experienced in braiding, this style is definitely one to try. You can either braid part of your hair into a crown, or try your whole head of hair for a bohemian updo.

For those who want something a little simpler, don’t be afraid to play around with different buns! The topknot has been a favorite in fashion for a few years now, and it isn’t going anywhere. Take it to the next level by trying a topknot sock bun—the sock bun will add extra volume to your limp summer locks, and is the perfect look to take from day to night. For a gentler, more tousled look, try a loose bun at the nape of your neck. It’ll add some glamour to your look.

Finally, when it truly is too hot to deal with anything, you can always resort to a big floppy hat. It’ll hide your frizzies, protect your face from the sun, and requires no time or practice!

Taking Festival Fashion to Daily Life

Street style photographers assemble for hours outside of Lincoln Center during Fashion Week in the hopes of capturing the chicest outfits and most inspirational ensembles from the high fashion elite. However, with the rise in popularity of music festivals like Coachella, festival fashion has garnered its own notoriety. Those same street style photographers now crowd the barren desert campgrounds of Palm Springs, photographing hip concertgoers rocking the latest trends.

As a bit of a festival veteran (I, too, paraded around Palm Desert last spring for Coachella and have attended San Francisco’s Outside Lands festival a few times), I must warn you that festival fashion isn’t always the most wearable in day-to-day life. The desert heat and packed amphitheatres make crocheted crop-tops and high-wasted cutoffs seem okay—but that doesn’t really fly in day-to-day life. Here are a few tips so you can still rock those fun festival styles without hitting the desert.

1. Go Wild with PrintsFestival goers love their animal prints! Cheetah print tops, pants and jackets—you name it. Try this trend on the daily by switching up your normal blouse with a cheetah print one. Pair it with simple black pants and a leather jacket—you’ll be rocking festival style without being too outrageous. If you want to be a little more daring, choose a pair of animal printed pants or a wild leopard print jacket.

2. Crop It
I’ve never seen more crop tops than when I was at Coachella. While some of the girls paired their cropped tops with hip-hugging shorts or jeans, I don’t have that confidence. If you’re like me and just want to show a little stomach, try a crop top with a high waisted pair of slacks or a maxi-skirt (another festival staple). Finish off the look with a fun structured jacket or blazer.

3. Heavy Metal

The hardest part about rocking festival trends is that they’re not always appropriate for daily wear. However, the chicest festival goers always had one thing in common—awesome statement jewelry—which can be worn no matter the occasion. This trend is super easy to try and you can tweak it to match your own personal style. I like piling on the silver jewelry: numerous rings on my fingers, a solid silver arm party, and a spiky statement necklace. Make the trend your own by layering your own favorite jewelry pieces—the more the merrier!

3 Essentials for a Sunny Spring Vacation

Spring Break is one of the most anticipated times of the year: for those of us who are lucky enough to take the time off, we get to escape our busy lives for a few days of rest and relaxation. While some like to travel to snowy ski destinations, I prefer the sun and the beach. The only difficult part? Packing for warm weather when the temperature at home is still hovering around a crisp 32°. But have no fear! After having gone through the difficult packing process myself, I’ve compiled a list of the top 3 beach essentials not to be forgotten when you go on your spring break getaway.

1. Wide-brimmed hat

For both the fair skinned and those who turn that perfect shade of golden brown, a wide-brimmed hat is absolutely necessary for any sunny destination. Not only do hats protect your face from harmful UV-rays (and premature aging—yikes!), they are also effortlessly chic. An image of Grace Kelly tanning on a beach in Monaco in To Catch a Thief instantly comes to mind with this accessory; if that’s not beach fashion inspiration, I don’t know what is.

2. Wedges

If you’re like me, in October, you dutifully put your best summer wedges in the back of your closet and traded them for booties. Well, it’s time to bring them out again! A great pair of wedges is honestly the only heel you need on Spring Break (and this is coming from someone who normally packs four pairs of stilettos for a weekend trip). Wedges are fun, comfortable and versatile and scream warm weather and summer. This is also a great way to try out the latest trends, don’t be afraid to mix a colorblock wedge with a patterned outfit!

3. Neon

I’ve always been a bit iffy about neon—it brings back not so great memories of the orange and hot pink Espirit outfits that my parents would buy for me in the 90s—but this season, it’s making a comeback. Spring Break is the perfect time to experiment with this new color trend (and neon looks great with a tan!). Whether you choose a highlighter green bikini or a hot pink asymmetrical dress, you’ll stand out in the crowd when you rock some neon on Spring Break.

Labor Day Weekend: Bring on the White!

“No white before Memorial Day and no white after Labor Day”- a fashion rule we’ve all heard year after year. Well, it’s Labor Day weekend and although we don’t necessarily follow the rule, we are stocking up on our favorite white hot summer looks before we pile on layers of cashmeres, leathers and knits for fall. All season we’ve lived in our laid-back preppy white shorts, our casual, chic white skinny jeans, and our favorite little white lace dress- so break them out this weekend and get ready to wear them one last time before summer’s end. Here’s how we are styling summer’s best bright white pieces this Labor Day:

Saturday Night Out

This weekend, take your little white dress from day to night and from summer into fall. Add a few glam accessories and a blazer for a night out. We love a pair of strappy black heels and edgy extras to put a twist on the feminine lace. Take the look further into fall by layering up with a cashmere cardigan, a leather or fur vest, and adding black opaque tights and boots.

Sunday Funday

For a casual Sunday, whether you’re brunching with friends, spending the day with the family, or enjoying the afternoon around town, this is the perfect day to wear your white shorts one last time. Pair them with a chambray shirt and pretty gold accessories for an effortlessly stylish look.

Labor Day Monday

Celebrate Labor Day in style and rock your favorite white jeans that you’ve worn all summer. Wear them with a festive top in blue or red and accessorize with fall neutrals. Bring your white jeans into fall by pairing them with boots and a chunky knit sweater.

Style is all about taking risks. So wear your whites this Labor Day weekend, pile on the layers, and dare to wear your whites all season long. After all, what’s fashion without a little rule breaking anyways?

Let’s Go To the Beach, Let’s Get Away…

When heading to the beach this summer, be sure to do it in style. Here are eight essentials for a fashioniSTA’s seaside getaway!

1. Fun, Flattering Swimwear
There are endless possibilities of swimwear styles each year. We recommend going for a classic, flattering suit with a bit of a twist- whether its a pop of color or fun print, like the ones above all from J.Crew.

2. Complimentary Cover-Up
Pair your swim suit with a pretty cover-up. We love this one from DVF. Not only is a Diane von Furstenberg print always in style, but this tunic can take you from the beach, to the beach bar or restaurant, to running errands around town- comfortable, effortless and chic.

3. Beach Flip-Flops
Havaianas are a summer must-have for fashioniSTAs- the most comfortable and practical rubber flip-flop. They come in a variety of colors and prints, and you can even design your own to perfectly show off your summer style and personality.

4. Tory Tote
It’s no secret that we love Tory Burch at STA, so when it’s time to tote all your summer goods to the beach, we favor a Tory Burch carry-all.

5. Sun Protection
Keep your skin moisturized and protected with a good SPF.

6. Beach Bedding
Nothing says summer like a colorful Missoni knit, so when you’re laying on the beach, sunning in the sand, sun in style with a Missoni print beach towel.

7. Quality Reading Material
Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, WWD, Glamour, Elle, etc…oh and Fifty Shades of Grey, obviously.

8. Summer Tunes
Currently on the fashioniSTA summer playlist:
Robyn “Hang With Me”
Ellie Goulding “Lights”
Josh Turner “All Over Me”
New Kids On The Block “Summertime”
Avicii “Silhouettes”
Vanessa Carlton “White Houses”
Zac Brown Band “Toes”
