Kick-It in Old-School Sneaks

Kristen Stewart made headlines when she ditched the heels for her favorite Converse sneakers at the 2009 VMAs.

A trend we LOVE this summer that we definitely anticipate carrying over into this fall is the return of the old school sneakers. Lots of designers are catching on to this trend as well, and designing their own exclusive lines with shoe companies while putting their twists on the classic looks.  If you’re a Converse lover like myself, one line definitely worth checking out is Free People’s unique twist on the classic Chuck Taylor’s. Even J. Crew has caught the sneaker fever and collaborated with Vans to create a vintage-looking line of sneakers.

With a celebrity endorsement like Taylor Swift, it is no wonder that Keds are making a killer comeback on women of all ages.  Keds complete a simple and classic look while being the epitome of comfort.  If you’re looking to add a pop of color, or spice up a simple look with some floral patterns, both Vans and Keds have released new lines for women that be may be just what you’re looking for.

One of the best part about stocking up on new sneaks is that you can find some amazing deals and don’t have to worry about making too big of a dent in your wallet.  If looking to add a bit of edge to your look, a graphic print pair of Vans, or studded pair of Chuck Taylor’s would do just the trick. Pictured below, Whitney Port completed her edgy red carpet look with a pair of leopard print vans that really stand out, even next to those graphic print leggings.

If you’re a fashionista who values comfort as much as I do, invest in a pair of sneakers that you love!  By adding a pair of plain white Vans or simple black Chucks, you will always have a simple and comfortable shoe to pair with just about anything.  The greatest part about this sneaker comeback is the amount of variety being offered in the stores right now, there is a unique pair to match every gal’s personal style!

Revenge of the Nerds

This season it’s chic to look like a geek. Those clothes that got you shoved into lockers and earned you wedgies when you were in high school, will now earn you fashion accolades. Want to let that inner nerd shine now that it is socially acceptable? Here are some tips for creating the look:

Tops:

-Classic golf shirts and oxford-cloth button-ups are a no-brainer. Also consider tees with subtle – or not so subtle – messages about your geek-like interests and persona.

-Throw a slouchy cardigan on to stay warm.

-Top off your look with a preppy blazer. Up the fashion ante in a navy one with gold buttons or an official-looking crest.

-Vests are a fabulous way to add a layer to your look as the weather gets warmer. But, keep it traditional here and steer clear of the cropped and girly versions of a few years ago. Masculine, full-length vests are best.

Dresses:

-Plaid and floral jumpers and rompers are sure to make a splash this summer.

Bottoms:

-Select jeans or khakis in skinny, slouchy-skinny and boyfriend cuts. Cuff them at the ankle or mid-shin in a messy roll.

-High-waist trouser or paper-bag waist pants also work well.

-For a more layered look, try shorts with trouser cuffs. Put a pair of tights on underneath to ward off the spring chill.

-Wear a skirt which is knee-length or shorter. Kilts, pleated versions, pencil skirts and anything with ruffles, floral prints or other girly elements are ideal.

Footwear:

-Lace up a pair of canvas sneakers like classic Keds or Converse All-Stars.

-Slip on a boat shoe. Sperry Top-Sider has released a collection of metallic versions of their iconic footwear just in the nick of time.

-Oxfords are the perfect choice. Keep them flat for day and heeled for night.

Accessories:

-Try out a pair of thick-rimmed glasses – whether or not you wear a prescription.

-Add socks to your outfit. Knee-high argyle or ankle socks with lace trim are best.

-Wrap a scarf around your neck. Bonus points for Collegiate colors, stripes or plaids.

-Hold up your pants (or shorts, or jeans, or skirt) with suspenders.

-Carry your stuff in a cross-body bag or slouchy satchel. Earn extra points for those hard-to-find chestnut and navy-colored leathers!

Happy Shopping!
