A TIMELINE OF TRINKETS: Jewelry Through the Decades

Every jewelry aficionado has at least one piece in their collection that stands out, be it for eye-catching glitz, overly ornate details, or understated simplicity.  But where do these pieces come from?  Heirlooms? Antique shops? Your local department store?  All jewelry, be they from yesterday or yesteryear, can be credited in design to certain eras.  Join us as we scour the cases at our Harvard Square location, hunting for pieces to help highlight the ongoing heyday of personal adornment!

Each groundbreaking design period had jewelry styles that are easy to identify, so let us begin with one of the earliest trends to break away from the mold of conservative cameos and basic gemstones…

ART NOUVEAU (all the rage: 1895-1915)

The graceful Art Nouveau period started with designers in France and those in America following suit. The most important characteristic of this kind of jewelry was its free-flowing nature. The whimsical lines found in Art Nouveau jewelry suggest the movement, passion, and youthful vigor in the new ideas of the turn of the century. At the heart of the Art Nouveau movement were nature motifs and fantastical elements such as fairies and wood creatures.

EXHIBIT A: Pieces in the style of Art Nouveau, ranging from $8 to $14

EDWARDIAN (all the rage: 1890-1920)

After the death of the UK’s Queen Victoria, the Edwardian era was ushered in when her son Edward took the throne. This was a lavish period with pearls and diamonds paired with emeralds, rubies and other gemstone accents. This era was proven to be a highly decorative and elaborate period, full of regal and bold components.

EXHIBIT B: Pieces in the Edwardian style, ranging from $6 to $16

ART DECO (all the rage: 1920-1935)

The period between the World Wars witnessed new interest in modernizing jewelry. Designers of the Art Deco period welcomed the clean lines of the machine age — forms inspired by nature or abstract sources followed geometric lines, a noticeable difference from both Edwardian and Art Nouveau jewelry.  In addition to the strong shapes, this was a period of contrasting bright colors.

Motifs of the Art Deco period included screw-back / clip-on earrings and Egyptian-esque jewelry (King Tut’s tomb was discovered in 1922). Themes of this era are still prevalent today — new diamond cuts were introduced to accentuate the geometric taste, including the emerald cut, triangle cut, trapeze cut, and marquis cut.

EXHIBIT C: Pieces in the style of Art Deco, ranging from $6 to $14

RETRO (all the rage: 1935-1950s)

Even before World War II, jewelry was changing. The Retro look was an infusion of old and new – utilizing the curves of Art Nouveau with the clean simple look of Art Deco, but in a scale not seen before. Big was beautiful when it comes to describing jewelry of the Retro period, elaborate and colorful with an array of gold and gemstones. It had Hollywood for its inspiration, so the retro jewelry was somewhat larger than life in style. This was also the period when charm bracelets became a favorite jewelry item.

EXHIBIT D: Retro-esque pieces, ranging from $6 to $16

CONTEMPORARY (all the rage: 1960s to present)

Jewelry in recent decades has come a long way. Plastics were introduced, which provided a huge outlet for new colors and styles. Price points decreased and everyone was now able to find an affordable style to suit them.  Bold, primary colors emerged, as did oversized cartoony shapes. This carried on well into the 1980s, but after the “massive consumption” years of the decade, less became more in the 1990s. The silhouette became neater as shoulder pads finally died and jewelry became non-existent or chic in its simplicity and barely-there quality. Floating necklaces were popular, as were simple studs for earrings.  Moving forward, the ’00s weren’t so much about any one trend — it actually relied heavily on past decades for inspiration. Add in leather cuffs, arm bands and cocktail rings, and you’ve got yourself a complete ensemble from the early 21st century.

EXHIBIT F: Contemporary pieces, ranging from $6 to $18

CURRENT (all the rage: now)

Because women have a need for newness in their style, fashion will continue to offer changes. Some trends are emerging in 2010, but they are subtle and cautious. Big, edgy and bold pieces are still significant; statement necklaces, large cocktail rings and massive bracelets remain important. What has emerged this year is that metal is playing a larger role in jewelry designs. Chains are among the most simple and ancient forms of jewelry, but designers are using them in elaborate and modern ways this season. Designs run the gamut, from delicate dangling gold earrings to bold bib-style necklaces, composed of dozens of strands of chains. The newest necklaces are mixtures of gold and silver, shiny and matte metals, often dressed up with crystals, charms, stones and pearls.

Judging from the variety of styles that can be found in the Harvard Square Second Time Around alone, one emerging trend is simply to mix it up.  Take a little Art Nouveau and toss in a little Deco, grab that Edwardian-esque set of earrings and contrast it with a dark chain necklace.  Blur the lines of yesterday and today… and where better to go than a one-stop shop over in Cambridge!

Consignment Shopping is the Best Kind of Shopping.

Consignment shopping is the best kind of shopping. Of course, we are a bit biased…but we’ve got some serious evidence to back up our claim.

At a consignment store you will find the high-end designer and brand name labels that you want – but normally can’t afford – at a fraction of their original retail cost.

In addition, consignment shops are the quintessential one-stop shopping location. Consignment shops carry every type of apparel and accessory known to man as well as the entire gamete of designers and labels. Mix high-end with low-end fashion in one place and span decades in one outfit with unique vintage finds.

Can’t quite get your head around wearing used apparel and accessories? Well, consider for a moment that shoes are already broken in to offer blister-free bliss, stiff denim is now soft and 34-inch pant legs have already been hemmed.

Still not convinced? Frequent your local consignment shop enough and you will be sure to find the discontinued style of Moncler coat that you were lusting after – but could not afford – last winter or an emerald green Chloe Paddington bag, a color that they only released in the Spring of ’06. Once that happens, you will be hooked!

Hopefully, I’ve made a believer of you… But, if not, check out a consignment store for yourself and make your own list of reasons! Happy shopping!

Get great looks for less at STA Mott St.

Wow!  Between the end of fashion week and the premiere of Housewives, time’s been a-flying!

Simon and I attended 18 shows and presentations this fashion week – it was a wild week with all sorts of new ideas for fall.  This season I either wore a dress from the designer’s show we were seeing, or I wore something off-the-rack from the Mott Street STA, and found myself wondering as I often do – how do you execute these runway looks in real life?  Aha…I feel a project coming on!!

The Zang Toi Look

Don’t have a Neiman Marcus budget of $3,000?  At Mott Street we found a collection of separates – an Armani jacket, Ann Taylor turtle neck, Laundry tuxedo pants, a black fedora and (of course) some Michael Kors shoes.  Total STA look = $400.

Next – this Academy of Art University look is cute, young and sexy in a wholesome way. Linlee and I found pieces from Theory and J. Crew paired with stiletto thigh high boots.  Again, we trimmed that runway budget down to $200.

The Academy of Art Look

Finally, I love this full, swingy skirt from Pamella Roland though it’ll set you back a few thousand. Linlee, Sophie and I found this great mauve silk tie neck dress and paired it with peach Manolos…always a girl’s best friend.  Grand total $350.  Go fashioniSTA!!  ~Alex

The Pamella Roland Look

Meet Alex this Thursday, March 11, at our Mott Street location in SoHo between 2-5pm.  She will be doing consignment so come on by!  262 Mott St., New York, NY, 10012 (212) 965-8415.

How to Shop Consignment

We know that you know how to shop. But, even the most seasoned shoppers can feel a bit intimidated by consignment shopping. That’s why we have compiled a list of consignment shopping tips.

1.  Stop into your local consignment shop on a regular basis.

Making frequent visits to your local store will ensure that you never miss a great find!

2.  Get to know the staff.

The staff at a consignment shop can conjure an Alexander McQueen blouse to match the pencil skirt you bought last week from a rack of t-shirts and will know that the Christian Louboutin stiletto boots on the top shelf will fit your narrow feet  – but only if they know your taste and your size.

3. Get yourself on a wishlist.

If there is a particular item that you are on the hunt for or a particular designer who, in your mind, can do no wrong, get your name on the store’s wishlist. Tell the staff what it is that you want and make sure that they know how to contact you. That way, when the coveted item or a piece from your favorite fashion house arrives, you will be the first to know about it.

4. If you have the time, shop ‘til you drop!

I am a true believer that a consignment store should be shopped from front to back. Dig through every rack and bin and scour every shelf looking for fashion treasures. Stash everything that you find in a fitting room. When you have finally finished looking over every inch of the store, head into the fitting room for a marathon try-on session. I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed!

5. If you don’t have the time – or the patience – for #4, hit up the themed racks.

Most consignment stores will have themed racks in addition to their general itemized organization. Some of these themes will be permanent while others may change according to season. Either way, they offer shoppers a chance to make quick and focused fashion pit-stops. For example, all STA stores maintain a New Arrivals rack. If you are a regular customer and only have a minute to pop in, you can be sure to see everything that has come in since your last visit all in one place.

Now that you are armed with the tricks of the trade, go forth and explore a new fashion frontier! Or, if you are already a devoted consignment shopper, go forth with renewed purpose and a few new tricks up your sleeve! Happy shopping!
